What is a Pain Management Appointment? (And Why Ours is Different)
If you’ve been living with a "dodgy" back or a neck that won't stop throbbing, the idea of booking yet another clinical appointment might feel a bit daunting. You’ve likely already seen your GP, maybe a specialist or two, and a handful of physios—all with mixed results.
So, what is a pain management appointment actually supposed to look like?
Most people expect a quick chat, a few physical tests, and a prescription or a referral. But at Relief and Restore in Edinburgh, we do things a bit differently. We aren't here to just "manage" your pain; we're here to find out why it’s invited itself into your life and stayed there.
The Standard Appointment vs. The Relief & Restore Way
In a typical clinical setting, you might get 20 minutes. That’s barely enough time to take off your coat and explain where it hurts.
At our clinic, your initial DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation) assessment is 90 minutes. Here is the breakdown of what you can expect:
1. The Deep Dive (History)
We start by listening. We want to know about that ankle sprain you had five years ago, the desk job you’ve had for a decade, and even how you breathe when you’re stressed. Chronic pain is rarely about a single event; it’s a story of how your body has learned to compensate over time.
2. The Movement Screen
This is where the magic of DNS comes in. Instead of just looking at the "painful bit," we watch how you move as a whole unit. We might ask you to lie on your back, lift your legs, or sit in a specific way.
We are looking for your "developmental blueprint." Are you using your diaphragm? Is your brain stabilising your spine before you move your arms? We’re looking for the "glitches" in your movement software.
3. Functional Testing
We test your "reflexive stability." This isn't about how many kilos you can bench press; it’s about whether your stabilising muscles "flick the switch" automatically when they should. If they don't, your big power muscles have to take over, which leads to those "knots" and chronic aches.
"Will it Hurt?"
This is the most common question we get. The answer is no. A pain management appointment at Relief and Restore isn't about "no pain, no gain."
DNS is a gentle, neurological approach. We are working with your brain to find positions that feel safe and stable. When your brain feels safe, it naturally dials down the pain signals it’s been sending out.
What Happens After the Appointment?
By the end of your 90 minutes, you won't just have a diagnosis—you’ll have an understanding. You’ll know:
The "Why": Why your neck is taking the hit for your weak core.
The "How": How to breathe and move to create instant stability.
The Plan: A roadmap of DNS-based movements designed to "reboot" your system.
Ready to Stop the Guesswork?
If you’ve been searching for "pain management near me" and you’re tired of the "quick-fix" approach, it’s time for a proper look under the hood.
Don't just manage the pain—restore your movement. Whether you're in Leith, Stockbridge, or the heart of Edinburgh, we’re here to help you get back to feeling like yourself again.
